Female Crowntail

How did you choose the name for your betta?

I noticed that she would sneak up behind my Amano shrimp and nip him in the back which would cause him to freak out and speed off in some random direction. At first, I thought she was trying to attack him, but she would never chase after him; she would simply poke him and then casually swim away. Funnily enough, she won’t go near him if he is facing her, she’ll only do this if he has his back to her. She has even gone as far as to get tangled up in the Java moss, just so she can creep up behind him. After a while, I figured she was just curious and playing around with him. So I named her Loki, after the trickster Norse god.

Is there a story behind your betta – when were you first united?

On January 30, 2016, I went with my mom to pick up my cousin from a birthday party; however, he wasn’t ready to leave, so my mom and I decided to buy some accessories for our cat at the nearest petco. I’ve always loved looking at the fish, so while my mom looked at cat beds, I beelined towards the bettas. I saw her on the top shelf and was immediately drawn to her colorless appearance. Most bettas I’ve seen are blue or red, but she was nearly white with some color on her fins. I thought she looked so interesting and coupled with the fact that she was the only female amongst males, I resolved to purchase her right then and there.

What makes your betta special to you?

For such a tiny fish, she has a lot of character. She’s so funny and interesting to watch. I love that she lets me hand-feed her and that she goes crazy every time she sees me by her tank. She’s even allowed me to touch her along her body and her fins. The amount of trust she has for me is insane, and I have a lot of love for this fish, so I guess that’s what makes her special to me.
